Ariocarpus fissuratus is a very interesting little plant that makes a spiral of tubercles and is one of the largest species in the genus, reaching up to 5-6 inches in diameter. As with many of the Chihuahuan Desert plants, there appears to be a north-south cline causing some taxonomists to name different subspecies or varieties, of which var. lloydii is the one most likely to be universally recognized by both taxonomists and cactus aficionados. Ariocarpus bravoanus is sometimes placed as a subspecies of A. fissuratus, but is now considered to be a distinct species.
