Echinocereus viereckii ssp. huastecensis is a clustering type with a limited distribution in northeastern Mexico. The most famous locality is Cañon Huasteca (hence the subspecies name), but plants have been spotted around Grutas García north of Monterrey and at Cañon de Rayones. Distinguished from subsp. viereckii by the more numerous ribs and extra long, golden yellow spines. The medium green stems are a great backdrop for the extra large, magenta-purple, funnel shaped flowers.
