Echinocereus viereckii subsp. viereckii is native to northeastern Mexico in the states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. Plants are found hanging out on limestone cliffs and slopes with subtropical vegetation, and yet are relatively hardy, tolerating winter lows in the low 20’s F here in Tucson. The bright green stems are a great backdrop for the huge, magenta purple flowers.
