Ferocactus acanthodes subspecies tortulispinus is found in Baja California, primarily from the hills near Laguna Chapala and near Mission Calamjue. The plants have 11 central spines with one of them being long and twisting and hooked at the tip. Where they grow with Ferocactus gracilis they are difficult to separate unless they are in flower. Ferocactus acanthodes subspecies tortulispinus has yellow flowers while Ferocactus gracilis has red flowers.
