Description
This Barrel Cactus has long been called Ferocactus covillei, but that name was relegated to synonymy and it is now known as Ferocactus emoryi, named by George Engelmann for William H. Emory, a major in the U. S. Army in the mid 1800’s and a surveyor who conducted boundary surveys of the Mexican-American border and the Canadian-American border, all the while making notes about the plants and people of the desert southwest. It is quite an honor to have your name associated with such an incredible barrel. It has stout spines and deep red flowers that appear in late summer.
