Stenocactus species #1

This unnamed Stenocactus exhibits characteristics from three or four species. It is currently growing in a 6-inch pot. The new spines are quite colorful, reddish at the base, grading to orange-red and then pinkish near the tip.

I suspect this particular plant might be a hybrid that volunteered in the nursery. When I key it out in Britton and Rose, it does not fit any species and has characteristics of S. lloydii, S. arrigens, and S. anfractuosus. Talk about a mess, somebody needs to do some major work on the genus Stenocactus!
