This species is native to the coastal part of central Sonora and a couple islands in the Gulf of California.

Agave subsimplex, not to be confused with Agave simplex, is native along the coast in central Sonora and a couple adjacent islands. I bought seed from Rare Palm Seeds and these appear to be true. They look very much like plants I have seen north of Kino which are pictured in the gallery.
